Hi guys, Today on ebay I won an interesting contraption. It is set up to make a solid block of tobacco and then slice it. It has a guillotine style cutter that is attached to a ratcheting mech that advances the tobacco to the next cutting position when the guillotine is lifted up. So in theory I make the block, and then just start cutting! I will post pics of both the machine and the results as soon as it arrives.
I know that we have to get approval to post links so if ya'all are patient I will photobucket the pics from the listing. I know there are some down home mechanical geniuses around here and maybe someone can produce them.
hope to have some pics soon

Alrighty, here we go...
This critter is a combination blocker and shredder.

It has a top that swings open to load the baccy.

After you load the baccy you swing the top down and there is a lock down that is swung up in place

A closer look at the lockdown

Once locked down we just crank the block down to pack the baccy

Here it is all set up and packed

After a couple of hours I open it and see what I got

OOOOOOO! BACCY!

Now I flip the little lever catch dowwn at the gear end of the critter

Now when I lift the blade, it will turn the gear and that will push my plug of baccy along for each cut

I keep the block down to guide the baccy but here I have it open so you can see better

With the highest lift that I can do it cuts the baccy at a nice pipe cut

with a lesser amount of lift I can get a very fine shred

Since the blade has a lot of wear on it I added a piece of wood under the machine to elevate it and get a greater range of movement on the cutter

The machine is old It is marked 'Brevette 1900' on the face plate

Wow! That is one heck of a contraption. Seems like 'ol timers' had equipment that was functional for their needs....later generations were spoon fed...and the need for a spoon is gone. Ironic how life goes in full circle cycles. Thanks for the great pics... Ohio ol_school

I know folks have been looking for baccy shredders around here and I found a couple good ones on ebay today. do a search in all catagories for 'Tobacco Cutter'
one is a cast iron crank style listed as 'OLD CAST IRON TOBACCO CHOPPER - CUTTER __(HAND CRANK)'
and one is a wooden box style that advances the plug when you lift the cutter arm somewhat like the one I did pictures of here. Listed as  "ANTIQUE WOODEN TOBACCO CUTTER /R.TIMMINS &SONS DEC 1870" (this one does not make the baccy block)

baccybeast: can you post some pictures with a ruler or some sizes in inches. I am going to build one . Do you like the block size ? What is the block size ? What would you change if you could ?
Thank you Dastardlydan

Hey Dan, Sorry it took a bit to get back to you. I will bust out the ruler and get some measurements. You making it in wood or metal?
Maybe I can take the original pictures and add some nice graphics to the with the measurements.

I WAS LOOKING AT THIS CONTRAPTION BEFORE I JOINED THE SITE....
IT LOOKS KINDA SIMPLE TO MAKE...OR AT THE LEAST HAVE A SEPERATE COMPRESSOR..AND A SEPERATE CHOPPER...
REMINDS ME OF THE OLD SCHOOL DAYS WHEN THE CLASSROOM HAD THAT PAPER CUTTER... WITH THE HUGE ASS BLADE ON IT...
