Cigar Molds

I read through a lot of the posts on this forum and discovered that acquiring cigar molds in the exact ring size and length that I would want is somewhat of a challenge.

So, being a professional woodworker with a shop loaded with tools, I thought about making my own and while I was at it, design the tools and jigs so that could quickly make any size I wanted. The pics below show the result of a 24 ring x 5 inch mold, but the jig I used to create it can be quickly adjusted to make pretty much any length and ring sizes of 24, 32, 40, 48, and 52. (Bigger would also be possible.)
The mold is made of Ohio cherry and the 1/4" bolts / wing nuts can be used for compression, or the whole mold can be put in a vice.

I'm also impressed with the table it's sitting on. Is this another of your projects?

Thanks Jack.

The cigar mold is sitting on a scrap piece of butcher block I use to cut up tobacco leaves. My work shop cranks out small cutting boards to large 800 lb professional butcher blocks.

But we prefer making more eclectic custom designed pieces.

They do. It's called a Lieberman Machine. Some cigar makers use it to roll up the filler with the binder before it goes to the cigar roller who puts on the wrapper.

O.K.
The obvious question:

How much for you to make me two such mold in the same size and ring gauge (I have absolutely had a fit trying to find this EXACT size mold).

ND53,

I just sent two molds to a forum member for evaluation and feedback. Once he gives me some advice for improvement, I'll post a price for custom molds.

I think the molds are pretty darn close already. I've used my 32 and 48 ring molds these past weeks to roll 110 cigars.

Stay tuned.

Awesome work John! So I got to ask did you drill the groves or dado cut them on a shapper table?

Drilling doesn't work at all and I do not use a shaper table. I've created some jigs that allow me to repeatedly align up the grooves.

A REVIEW OF JOHN"S MOLDS

Hi all,
I got two of John's molds (one 24 ring and one 32 ring) they are great.
They are well made, fit snugly, and bind up nice and tight with the 5 bolt set up. I have used old school hand made molds and John's molds are as good in quality and fit.

The double open end allowed the cigars I bunched and bound to set up in just 30 minute per quarter turn ( a one hour turn around from bunching to wrapping) and the bolts lift the mold up off the surface allowing good air flow. These carriage bolts have a square root and so they do not spin in their sockets thus insuring a quick and snug fit for the nuts (no spinning bolts to scar your mold and frustrate your wrench).

As a wood worker I have to say 'game recognize game'

Well done John
Will
