If everybody smoked there could be a tobbaco shortage and high prices!

Ed, Don't know what to say other than 'in my prayers' for a good scan next time. Hang tough...you are an example to us all of how hard work and dedication overcome obstacles. You know you have all of us in your corner. Bud

Hi all, just got this email from the folks who make the Mark 1000 shredder.
10/27/09 Jack: We have temporarily suspended shipments of the Mark 1000. We've improved the motor, but still aren't satisfied with the speed. Upon customer reccomendations, we purchased a Mail Mate M5 Cross Cut paper shredder from Staples. When you take off the paper guide it works great. Cost about $67. I think this is the answer to shredding. John Roscoe
Looks like that's on the back burner now.

I'm in the process of designing a tough hand cranker.Leaned alot from using cheapie housewife units.
Salad Shooter:
Cheap plastic outer housing(causes jamming)Needed outer steel housing with tight tolerances.
Blades run straight(too much load on the little gearbox and motor)Simply angled cutters
Cheap thin blades(flexing and lack of cutting surface)Thicker hardened steel blades.
From my experience with the shooter the baccy needed to be brought below case and about 20% dust resulted and brought back.Smoked o'k but hard to load the injector properly.Close to commercial cig grindings.
Food Processer with the twin thin curved blades:
Cased baccy mostly dragged around Way to high r.p.m's
Cheap thin blades once again.
Weak motors and gearing.
Wish me luck.Got the machines(tools) that they only dreamed of for machining back when the other toughies were built.
I still will stick with the old hand crankin.Fun and control

taxedenough, We are in total agreement on this topic. I have been trying to come up with a way to convert one of my cast iron meat grinders into a tobacco grinder. Smaller shaft..more blades ? Keep me posted. Don't have the machine shop I used ot have access to, but the mind is still thinking of other options. Ohio ol_school

Bud,
I keep starin at an induction motor rotor(inside part that spins). The rotor has aluminum cage bars that are skewed and easy to mill for blade insertion.I've ripped these things to bits many times for wind turbines.Would be easy to mill flats on the shaft for the crank.
Thinkin planer blades. Lets keep in touch either p.m or here

This probably a dumb ass newbie question.
Can you cut/shred the leaf while it is still wet? Straight off the plant. I imagine this would be a lot easier than when its dry.
It would also speed up drying times due to increased exposed surface area.
Probably a d**n good reason why it isn't done though.

You can't shred green leaf because the sap causes it to rot, you would end up with compost not tobacco. The chemical changes in the leaf would not take place either so even if by some miracle it didn't rot you would be left with something that was not fit to smoke.

well how did this work for you?
i have 2 old school metal meat grinders also that i was thinking would work for the cutting process...
mine has a lot of different blades for it....
i figured id have to cut it a little first then shove it in and crank the handle,,,
so how did it do?

I know its crude, but it works for me, and the tobacco is most smokable.
