Mark, I'm going with the old school, shred by hand. I've looked high and low for a good mechanical method/machine and the only one that comes close is the Tech 1. It comes up for auction on eBay occasionally but the price has been rising it's an antique one made in Germany I believe.

Hi Jack
I found a neat little cheapie processor in the wifs cupboard
It works great if the baccy is dry enough and hand sliced a bit.If it's to moist the blades just drag it.
Just testing.

Hi Taxed, I've about given up on finding a machine that will do the job and I'm not paying 100 bucks or more for a shredder.

If everybody smoked there could be a tobbaco shortage and high prices!

Mark-Jack, Well today I figured I would try my 'paper cutter' method. The small plug was still too thick to run to the blade without taking the guard off. After removing the guard it did cut...but instead of nice 1/64" ribbons like I had planned it barely cut 1/4" strips. So that idea is tabled for good! I decided to get the Cuisinart out and finish the job. I had already put the tobacco in case by spritzing with water and nuking t for 30 secs in the microwave. I used the 2 blade attachment in the bottom rather than one of the shredding blades (might try one of those next). Dropped my wide ribbons in and pulsed for about 5 seconds.....came out very similar to a course cut that I have been using. I know it will work in my injector. So Mark may be onto something. The knife and block dropped into the food processor looks like a very good alternative to a high priced shredder. I know my wife will freak using the Cuisinart (even though it is mine) to cut tobacco so I might start looking for a cheaper version out there to keep peace in the family. this is the results:
A little concerned about how strong it smelled compared to store bought. I used about a 30% mixture of Walker /Lizard Tail with my Virginia. I will let it dry out to room RH and roll some later this week. We will see. Ohio ol_school

The key is to get it in proper case. Then i cut the leaves with a scissors to half inch or so to fill the hopper. It should only take a couple pulses with the processor to make it injectable so no bricking.
School what does your machine look like?Mines just tiny and only capable of a few ounces at a clip.

Mark, I think I read where it is a 10 cup capacity. I did that batch in 2 portions...possibly could have done it all in one, but wanted to watch it closely for my first time. The reason I am bricking and curing mine is for space. I am using that upper freezer of my smoker..not that big to cure too many loose leaves....but I can cure a whole bunch of plugs. Ohio ol_school

| I made a press block like the one talked about earler on this forum. After I pressed a plug about one and a half inch thick i used my food/meat slicer and it did a great job. I mixed this about 50 - 50 with some red Cap pipe tobacco and it injected pretty good with my Top cigarette machine. I t was real good. Later i made a few cigarettes with My home straight and it was good but really strong. I have also added a little to my homemade cigars and that also was good.

shykat, Is that a spiral cut ham slicer (one that goes around and around the ham), or just a regular meat slicer? I have a couple of meat slicers...never thought of that. May give that a try as the paper cutter was a total flop! A problem is only an opportunity to find a solution! Ohio ol_school

Ohio: Meat slicer does a very good job. I tried using a paper slicer (long guillotine blade), a sharp hand plane, slicing by hand (which works okay if you roll up a monster cigar, and slice from just under the top edge down, rotating the cigar every couple of slices) and graduated to a meat slicer, which does an excellent job. If you have the patience, you can get it finer than commercial tobacco. I'm using a second hand, cheap plastic one, picked up for $2 at a thrift shop. It works okay, but I think I'll spring for a better one now. Modified to add: I haven't yet tried it using a brick. I just roll up a very tight, large cigar, slice off the loose bits at the end (and put them in the center of the next cigar) and start slicing. I rotate the cigar to get rid of the ragged tail that forms after a few cuts (cheap slicer) and end up with shreds of about 1 mm in thickness, which is good enough for me and the missus.

ohio, just a plain ole meat slicer. i have one with a 12 inch blade, sharp as all get out... just gonna try it on 1 brick to see how it works and ease of clean up. no need to get the wife all up in a twist from hard to remove resin.

ydeboi, The batch in the picture took until yesterday to balance the RH to be dry enough to roll easily. I had it in high case to cut it, and it retained moisture very well! It actually tastes very good. I had this block in with my other for a short period of time when I was 'laying on the smoke', but for only a day, so it did not turn as dark nor have the strong after taste of the dark fire cured plug. All in all very happy with it. Next batch will be a 'no' smoke, just kiln dried tobacco. I want to compare the colors and taste. Getting read up on snuff...I don't use it, but I have some people who do.... looks like a good place to use that landscaping mulch I made with the other plug. Picture of some of the 'other' plug ground up to make snuff
