Well I guess the good news for me is I only waited to harvest my suckers after the first frost. Last night temps hit 31*F...and cold. Weatherman told a little white lie in the forecast....was not supposed to get that cold at my house. So anyway I went out today and cut them down. Sorta sad they did not have a full life to grow big and mature.....I will miss them...ROTFLOL Here are the results:

Here is how I did my 'dark fire cure' last time: The smoke

The fan and smoke

leaf drying temps bueno!

So we will see how cold temps affect color setting and drying.. Ohio ol_school

Very cool ohio, hope i can get as much. Not bad for a bunch of suckers. You'll be doing this for three or four days or whatever it takes? They look happy. I hope they dry and color perfectly for you.
Man, the fry pan thing looks bbq tasty! Nice setup too. I always appreciate illustrative pictures - thanks.

So anyways, my refrigerator died a couple of days ago, and I got a new one comin’ tomorrow. I’ve been debating whether or not to turn the old frig into a kiln (where to put it?), such as yours, which is inspiring btw, or have the delivery guys take it away for free, or have a PG&E program give me $35.00 to recycle it. If this had happened a couple of months ago I would have definitely kept it for a top-of-the-line curing kiln. But now I’m thinking that I should take the money and buy a sheet or two of insulation board and go from there. Or, or I could wait a few months for me tebaccy to dry and cure naturally. These things I ponder and drives me crazy... I think it's a twilight, one step beyond zone time thing.

ric, Problems problems...... I know when mine died I had just been reading plans form one of the universities about how to convert a fridge into a smoker. I was about to go out and buy one to do my smokies, sausage, and jerky. So I converted it with stuff I had laying around the house. It works fantastic! Temps are steady..easy to heat, and kept in the garage it is out of the way. Now of course it has become an excellent kiln. I heat it with a 40 watt light bulb to maintain the 120-130*F temps for curing. I have used it for leaf drying...stem drying, and dark fire curing. The nice thing is I can throw a hose to it to clean it out...and it is ready again for smoking my meats....that is if Bambi will hold still long enough for it! (I have done poultry, beef, cheese and pork as well). I press into blocks....cure for about a month....and it is a fine smoke...very easy. Also have been making snuff for some of the guys...it cures at same temps for a week. Hope this helps. Ohio ol_school

Well okay, thanks man, you convinced me somewhere around fantastic, fine smoke and 40 watt! So I canceled the free pickup and cash, managed to maneuver the thirty-year-old green monster outside… had to remove a portion of sliding glass door to get her through, (ultra friggin’ heavy and the ol’ freezer compartment was still working!) and began stripping ‘er of anything I didn’t need. I was doing pretty good maintaining my manly dirty deed and duty until I reached for the spewing compressor to save the patio from stain, and that’s when I threw out my back.
All’s not lost ‘cause it warranted a nice back massage, which reminded me of all the self-induced pain and suffering in order for me to kill myself! Ha. But I’d like to look at it as a persistent pursuit of an enjoyable hobby and craft that will prolong my tobacco happiness.
Speaking of which, and I hope you don’t mind me asking, but I was wondering about your frig/kiln setup, as well as your methods of curing – with pictures! But for now I think I’ll wait for the insulation to drip dry on my presumably precious patio concrete (which already looked like crap years ago) and my back to feel better before I tackle where my supreme kiln will eventually do its time-machine thing. I think all I have to do is drill a couple of holes, have a plan, and I’ll be set - - I’m excited about it. Thanks.

Ric, Sorry about the back...those rascals are heavy! I had mine in the basement...had my son come over one day and said "I need you to help me move something"...after much moaning and groaning we got it upstairs...removed the door to get it out and then had to go through the front door as it would not fit through any other door. But after all was said and done (my wife complaining I was a pack rat and never threw anything out) it took its new place in the garage. Mine is an upper freezer/lower fridge. I drilled a 1 1/2" hole (had pvc pipe leftover form an old house project) through the inside to connect the two. I used the same hole-saw to make a top and bottom vent hole. I put a short piece of pvc pipe in the holes with silicone caulk to hold them in place. I drilled a 1" hole in the back of the bottom fridge to be able to run plugs out for the heating element/fan/clamp style shop-light. I put a piece of of old radiator hose in that hole as an insulator from the sharp metal edge (did not want to electrocute myself one day moving things around inside). Indoor outdoor thermometers/hygrometer or wet bulb thermometer...and just like that you got a smoker/kiln!! Utube has several vids now on how to convert... have fun....sorry about the back.. Cool – very resourceful! I’d like to see some of your recipes. Things are comin’ along… so far, I think the only thing I’ll need to buy is foil tape for an ugly crack in the back of the freezer compartment – the control panel conveniently hid it (duct tape doesn’t holdup very well in heat). The crack explains the titanic weight and iceberg drainage.
I took out the needless stuff, i.e. the portion separating the top freezer and frig, as well as the top and bottom door panels/shelves - bigger is better, ‘cause I aint puttin’ eggs and butter in there!
Last night, I used the door panels as templates and cut and drilled a sheet of shower acrylic/plastic… don’t even know why I have the stuff besides to cover a beat-up table, but… it’s as thick and heavy-duty as the refrigerator panels so I hope it’s practical. Should reinforce a tight seal. That is if I can align the new panels, rubber seals and all the screw holds… that’ll be today’s project… uh, I’m movin’ a little slow. I’ll look again, but I couldn’t find how to convert a refrigerator to a tobacco kiln on U/YouTube.
IF I ever get done with the green-monster-time-machine, I’ll post pics, somewhere.
Thanks for the info.

UPDATE: captain's log... Apparently you’re either using a smaller size frig and/or left the freezer floor intact in order to get those temps with a mere 40 watt bulb… maybe your frig has better insulation than my 30 yr. old, 18 + cubic footer, or, or your garage is much warmer? After several hours, I got a measly 82F with a 60-watt bulb (darn!); 102F with two 60-watt bulbs, and my latest attempt, I broke down and bought a 125-watt heat lamp and clamp-on, which overnight, jus’ sets at 120F. It looks like a pan of water won’t produce the kind of humidity we need (16 RH - another darn!)… soooo, maybe an added humidifier, or rice steamer/crock-pot will give ‘er the extra kick she needs.
At any rate, it’s keeping me fairly busy - my studio/garage looks like it was blown up, haheho… and I need to rearrange the layout a bit (actually a lot) in order to get the green-supreme out from the middle of the floor… then I’m gonna stuff her with dried tobacco, cover her with a blanket, and hope I don’t have to hover, though I perfectly know I will. For more late-night entertainment, I’m seriously thinking “window” - that'll be cool.

RIC
, Sorry about that......my fridge was an over/under style. The top section was a freezer compartment/bottom the fridge. I joined the two by drilling a 1 1/2" hole into the bottom of the freezer compartment and running a PVC pipe through it. My upper section temps for the freezer stayed at 128*F with a 40 watt bulb. To keep the temps up in the lower section I had to go to a 60 watt bulb. I did notice when temps started dropping into the 40's and 50*s outside it took longer to get up to temp, and I had to keep the doors and vents closed. I have 100 & 150 watt bulbs standing by in the event the outside temps get to normal Ohio lows! If that fails I know I can keep the temps up using my electric hot plate (that is what I normally use for smoking and cooking my smokies etc.)
I have noticed on my second crop that the hanging (color curing) process is taking much longer due to low air temperature. They have been hanging for two weeks, and still green with no color change.....just wilting and shriveling a bit. I may have to strip the leaves and put them in the lower section to facilitate drying. Stay innovative! Ohio ol_school
