Yes and no person1. You can root, propagate and cultivate suckers, and they will get bigger, but really not big enough to be too concerned with or waste much of your time. They basically produce a very small tobacco plant that's geared to flower. I think it has a lot to do with its particular life-span or cycle of the original plant.

Now, if time and weather are in your favor, the suckers from the remaining couple of inches of the stalks will continue to grow after harvest, as well as if you primed... and will get to be big enough for a nice second harvest - hopefully! But they too strive to bloom soon.

That makes sense Ric.

They are obviously packed with reproductive hormones and would also be reacting to shortening days and longer nights.

I am guessing you are talking about suckers that appear after the solstice when the plant is gearing towards reproductive growth?

If everybody smoked there could be a tobbaco shortage and high prices!

Person1,
Gotta go with Ric on that one. Suckers are the nightmare on Elm street for the good tobacco plants. You have to stay on them or they will over run your good leaf. The vegetable oil treatment works great...heck I might try PennZoil next year,..give them some gitup and go LOL.

They grow 4 or 6 leaves then want to bloom. Leaves are skinny ..not big and fat like original growth. I have some from the original stalk that are doing well....or they were..I just looked at my outside thermometer...33.2*F...close to freezing....they got large, but for the most leaves are narrow.

I picked some sucker leaves yesterday. They were 3-4 inches wide and 8-10 inches long. Although smaller than the first leaf, they were every bit as sticky.

Yup, they are. the ones in the smaller pots are rooted suckers, trying to produce buds. You can see why it's not worth the transplant effort, unless you're after seed pods.

The ones growing from the ground and in the 5-gal buckets are after the original harvest -  suckers gone wild! Most are sticky... and they love me.

Was not supposed to get below the mid 30's by the lake....got me this time. Will cut tomorrow to try to salvage what is left.

After an absolutely dry spring and summer it f i n a l l y RAINED for a couple of days. I think that’s all that was needed to feed ‘em. I was thinking of fertilizing, but I may have to do an emergency premature harvest if another storm or cold weather hits, and I read/heard that you shouldn’t fert too soon before harvest (?).

Sorry about the frost and cold stuff guys… so for so good here - my extended forecast looks nice enough, 70s to mid-60s. Just in case, next year I’ll plant sooner in order to make sure I can feast on the suckers!

Since you liked the photos, here’s a little slideshow overview, or should I say an album of my babies growing up. I’m putting it together for family and friends… oh and my tobaccy friends… not quite finished; should probably include a few suckers, but you’ll get the picture.
Cheers to you!

Bummer man! It looks like you had a good harvest anyways.
Seems MathaNature has a way of telling us ALL things must pass. The good news now is that it’s a low/no maintenance garden.
But like you said, never know till ya try!

Hey, they don’t call ‘em suckers for nothin’. First they break your back and then they break your heart.

Hey Guys

They have been below freezing many times and pretty much no dreaded black. There are still some green leaves Some that are color curing normally Some that are dried to good baccy color and shribbled up bad kinda expected from a young sucker leaf that's probably 90% water.

I did this on purpose to see what would happen so don't feel bad for me

I'll report back around Thanksgiving if they're not snowed in

I plan on selling it to RJ reynolds
