I have some that have been color curing for about 8 weeks and they are developing that tobacco smell. I also have some that have color cured for the same length of time and do not have that smell. Since I have 3 varieties I'm assuming that different strains will develop the smell at different rates. Just my observation from my own tobacco.

UPDATE: captain's log...
Apparently you’re either using a smaller size frig and/or left the freezer floor intact in order to get those temps with a mere 40 watt bulb… maybe your frig has better insulation than my 30 yr. old, 18 + cubic footer, or, or your garage is much warmer?

RIC,
Sorry about that......my fridge was an over/under style. The top section was a freezer compartment/bottom the fridge. I joined the two by drilling a 1 1/2" hole into the bottom of the freezer compartment and running a PVC pipe through it. My upper section temps for the freezer stayed at 128*F with a 40 watt bulb. To keep the temps up in the lower section I had to go to a 60 watt bulb. I did notice when temps started dropping into the 40's and 50*s outside it took longer to get up to temp, and I had to keep the doors and vents closed. I have 100 & 150 watt bulbs standing by in the event the outside temps get to normal Ohio lows! If that fails I know I can keep the temps up using my electric hot plate (that is what I normally use for smoking and cooking my smokies etc.)

I have noticed on my second crop that the hanging (color curing) process is taking much longer due to low air temperature. They have been hanging for two weeks, and still green with no color change.....just wilting and shriveling a bit. I may have to strip the leaves and put them in the lower section to facilitate drying.
Stay innovative!

Ed,
i got some Virginia pods for you also. If you like I can send some of this Walker broadleaf...my research says it is a Virginia variety tobacco....definitely smokeable!
I am looking for some Turkish myself as mix...just because that is what everyone says to do.
I should have your addy....I will get it out to you...no hurry as I have been busy doing other things for awhile. Schedule should slow down in a week or so.

I have now been maintaining 125 degrees, to as much as 126.9, with a lower one inch hole open and part of a one inch hole on top open.  Humidity is staying at 85%.

If I shut the fan off, humidity rises to 90% and temperature drops three of four degrees.  Without the pan of water, humidity drops to 65%.

So, I think I will take my chances with the fan and water and an 85% humidity and try to maintain the 126 degrees.

Its been thirteen days and it still has a sweet tea odor, but not as strong.

Thanks for  all your suggestions, this forum, from the start, has been a great help.
